Day 6
Listen to the Podcast
Join us for Day 6 of Journey to the Cross and the picture of Jesus being nailed to the cross. Jesus endured great suffering and was obedient to the point of death. Upon Him was all our sin, suffering, and shame. We give it all to Him who alone can carry it and bring healing.
“Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering” Isaiah 53:4
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53
Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
Gospel Reading: Mark 15
They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha.
They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get. Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge written against him was: “The King of the Jews.” They crucified two criminals with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself by coming down from the cross!” In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.
Reflection Time
The Savior of the world was mocked with the very title that declares His victory as our coming King. Here, we see Jesus display such humility and obedience.. He not only carried His own physical cross that He was about to be nailed-to… but He simultaneously carried the weight and immeasurable cost of laying-down His life for the very people who would crucify Him.
What great strength.. knowing that He could save Himself, yet submitting to The Father’s call on His life to save all of humanity. To save us.
Questions for Reflection
Picture Jesus as He carries the cross up the dirt path… struggling, yet in full submission, and spurred on by the desire to save you. How do you see Him responding?
When you look at the cross, consider the weight of what you have been carrying in your own life. When you look at Jesus, knowing that He has chosen to carry this weight for you, how do you feel?
What do you still need to let go of and let Him carry for you? How would this change your life?
Put yourself in this scene with the knowledge you have now of Jesus:
When you think of His obedience, ‘to the point of death’, how does this compel your heart to respond to Him? What do you want to say? Tell Him now.
Maybe you are reminded of a time when you have been mocked for what compels your heart in your own life. For Jesus, what compelled His heart was He and The Father’s great love for us.
What must Jesus think of you to be so obedient in carrying your cross? Ask Him what He thinks of you, and allow Him to pour out His love.
