Day 5
Listen to the Podcast
On Day 5 of Journey to the Cross as we consider what Jesus endured on the cross. The magnitude of his suffering and humiliation is so great. He suffered so that all things may be redeemed including our very own lives. He is the one who brings beauty from ashes. In our darkest places, He works for good.
“... they divide my clothes among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” Psalm 22:18
Scripture Reading: Psalm 22
“…they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”
Gospel Reading: John 19
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it." This was to fulfill what the scripture says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots." And that is what the soldiers did.
Reflection Time
Not only was crucifixion meant to inflict the maximum pain, but it also gave no opportunity for relief, as the victim would alternately suffer shortness of breath from hanging on their arms and then have to push up with his pierced feet, dragging his scourged back across the rugged wood. The experience was also public, reserved for the worst of criminals, and often included the victim’s being stripped naked, adding utter humiliation to the punishment. Jesus was no exception. He suffered every one of these effects, and yet He was sinless; innocent of anything deserving of judgment, let alone public execution.
Questions for Reflection
Even Jesus’ clothing was taken from Him and haggled over like items at a garage sale, and yet He submitted to it for you and for me.
What is your response when you think about what He endured?
The soldiers at the cross thought they were in control; keeping watch over and killing Christ, but they were in fact making the case for the deity of Jesus by fulfilling prophecy from Psalm 22.
When have you seen God take what is meant for evil and turn it to good?
Acknowledge that and worship Him.
Is there a situation in your life where you are longing for God to bring “beauty from ashes”?
Invite Him into that need… ask Him to build your faith.
