Three Questions
This past Sunday I shared three questions (thanks Jon Acuff) we should ask every questionable, loud, and repetitive thought...three security checkpoints these kinds of thoughts should go through before they are allowed to travel around in our minds.
Is it True?
Is it Helpful?
Is it Kind?
For the majority of us, the majority of thoughts that knock on our door each and every day are negative- some studies say 80%- crazzzzy right!?
Just as we would never tell a stranger to come in, grab a drink from the fridge, and play with our kids while we’re getting ready in the bathroom...
We should never invite any and every thought to just waltz on in and make themselves at home in our brains?
But we do this all the time don’t we?
We need to do something different.
We need to set up some layers of protection.
In Romans Paul tells us not to copy the behavior and customs of this world, but to let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think... And he tells us in Philippians that the God who can think things into existence is working in us, giving us the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
He’s also given us fancy words slash truths like Neuroplasticity and Neurogenesis (if you are even the least bit curious as to what those words mean, I think God may be trying to get you to listen to the sermon- click here for more goodness____) among countless other proofs that He’s literally working in us and through us to keep us going toward his good and pleasing and perfect will.
Which clearly means that God has given us the ability to choose the dialogue we believe and respond to.
He didn’t say it would be easy, and some of us may need to take additional steps (therapy, counseling, medication), but it’s possible and it’s definitely worth our effort since our thoughts shape and direct our entire lives!
What thought has been having its way, in all the wrong ways in your life?
What thought needs to be shown the door?
Who do you need to talk to?
If our lives will always drift toward our most repeated thoughts...
Shouldn’t we make sure...
They are True.
They are Helpful.
They are Kind.
