Day 2

Listen to the Podcast

On Day 2 of Journey to the Cross, we remember Jesus as not only the Saviour of the world, but the suffering servant.

Jesus suffered to end our suffering. He was humiliated to heal our places of humiliation. He endured scorn so that we would not be crushed by it.

β€œFor he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds, we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5

Scripture Reading: Psalm 72

Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son! May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice! Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness! May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!

Gospel Reading: Matthew 27

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Reflection Time

Jesus is King of all creation. Everything in heaven and earth belongs to Him and is called to be under his loving rule. It is painful to see what he endured. The breadth of his love for us is hard to grasp.

In the hands of the soldiers, we see Jesus endure abject humiliation. Instead of honor, they heaped shame upon him. Instead of words of praise, they mocked him. Instead of words of blessing, they spit on him. Instead of a crown of glory, he wore a crown of thorns. Oh, the humility of our savior. Jesus did not come as a conquering King, He came as a suffering servant. He suffered to end our suffering. He was humiliated to heal our places of humiliation. He endured scorn so that we would not be crushed by it.

Questions for Reflection

What are areas of your life and heart that you have not yet given over to His care and healing?

Jesus is perfectly trustworthy and wants to hear what we need. Tell Him what you need Him to do in these painful areas.

Take a moment to worship Him, praise Him for who He is and thank Him for His power to heal.
