Day 1

Listen to the Podcast

Join us for Day 1 of Journey to the Cross as we reflect on the enduring love of Jesus.

Although Jesus knew His assignment was leading Him to the cross, He willingly submitted to the Will of the Father so that we would be saved.

β€œThis is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” 1 John 4:9

Scripture Reading: Psalm 118

The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. The Lord has done it this very day;  let us rejoice today and be glad. Lord, save us!  Lord, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 27

Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said, "You say so." But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he did not answer. Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many accusations they make against you?" But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge so that the governor was greatly amazed. . . . So when Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took some water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves." . . . and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.

Reflection Time

Have you ever endured gossip, slander or false accusations? It is deeply painful to have your heart, actions and intentions lied about. Deep wounds are inflicted when people speak publicly what you privately know is not true. When we look to Jesus we see he endured much worse. He knew no sin. His intentions towards humanity were full of love and mercy. He came to save and not condem. At this moment, in the hands of an angry mob, they only tell lies about Him. His friends were silent. Pilate, the final person who could intervene was now washing his hands of this matter.

Questions for Reflection

Take a moment to picture Jesus before the crowds. As they shouted lies and accusations, He silently endured out of love.

Consider His great love for them and us. Imagine this scene and consider His great love for you.

Now picture Jesus before Pilate as he saw the final opportunity to escape this death had vanished. Jesus set his heart towards the cross- towards mercy for those who gave him none in return.

What are you feeling right now as you picture this scene? Tell Jesus what your heart feels toward him as you see him before the crowds and Pilate.

Think of a time in your own life when you were misunderstood, misrepresented, slandered, or even falsely accused.  Jesus, the creator of the world can empathize with your hurt.

Tell him any pain you still feel knowing He understands.
